Toward Utopia - The Other Side of the Rainbow: An Allegorical Poem
Toward Utopia - The Other Side of the Rainbow
The poem written in blank verse, is a modified inspiration from a popular legend in classical folklore. The seas of the ancient world are known to have borne many pirates on their sojourn to faraway islands home to elusive rainbows. It was believed that sparkling jewels as treasure would be found on the other side of those rainbows. Motivated to hoard untouched wealth, they would set sail on their voyage to fortune. Who knew, back then, that the closer you approach a rainbow, the farther it glides away from you? This poem captures the imaginary idea of perfection and how that we may not reach our desired perfect world, the idea, however, is powerful enough to unite us into building a better world. In our relentless pursuit we end up improving; improving to form a better version of ourselves, and of course, a developed world. After all, it is the idea of perfection that keeps us going.
We sail on a boat,
On waging waters that bear us,
Carrying us afar.
Afar, to a distant land,
To which a rainbow is abode,
A shimmering one, promising us
our chased-perfectness.
Perfectness, we dream an ans'r to problems all
Isn't Imperfect a menace omnipresent?
Malevolent misery, deathly disease,
Slowness of life, a prick of discomfort,
All crushed by the rolling boulder of
Utopia.
Utopia, a global identity we long,
"O, when shall You reign the human empire,
To wipe all sorrows deemed unnatural?"
Wait, no we can't,
Hurry must we, our nature impatient.
Impatient, we are to garner ancient treasure
guarded by the elusive rainbow
on an isle unchartered,
Profound - its enigma.
Enigma, captivated we are to venture,
Set sail on the darkening sea,
Unpromising as always,
Yet, when slaves we become to Determination,
The hostile sea only provokes a temperament resilient,
An attitude conducive to return its roars with unstoppable might.
Might, aren't pirates upholders of might?
They are, when Greed ushers them towards ever eyed-treasure.
Commoners are no different
when imaginary reality piques us.
Pulled we are to a promising future.
Future, devoid of pain any,
A bright image of flowing invariant waters of pleasure
leave us afresh, full of hope to reach utopia.
Utopia, an idea that enthrals us,
Motivates us to row faster toward the elusive rainbow,
Lies on the other side untouched precious treasure.
Whether we reach it or not, lies out of question,
For what matters is Humanity's striving,
A striving that betters with every row,
A striving that unites us in crafting a better world,
The Garden of Eden,
Our Utopia.
